SCAM ALERT

The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department recently uncovered an out of  state scam wherein persons had created false letterhead documents that requested the removal of detainers and the immediate release of an inmate, which was then faxed to the law enforcement agency. The scam was facilitated through the use of a home computer. We strongly suggest that all agencies utilize the GCIC/ NCIC System when responding to an outside agency requesting that a hold be placed on inmates, or that a detainers be removed and the inmate released.  Currently, teletype verification is the most effective and secure method of validating these requests, thus minimizing the potential for improper releases.  For additional information you may contact Captain Melinda Allen of the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department at (770)822-3111.
